Is this the right direction for me ?
The psychological data science track is suited for students that hold a B.A. in psychology or related fields (e.g., biology, economics, computer science), who want to acquire/improve their data science skills, and who are passionate about studying humans' thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Students without a B.A. in psychology will be required to complete a list of (personally-tailored) B.A. courses before they can be admitted as a full-time M.A. student.
Below are some cases that may help you decide if this track is the right one for you:
no...I am not very interested in psychology, but want to become a data scientist
|
The data science program is meant to advance students' skills in data science methods. These skills are relevant and applicable in the industry, but this track is aimed at training researchers (cognitive, neuro, and social psychologists) to have strong skills in data science (rather than data scientists who are also interested in psychology). Students who predominantly want to become data scientists in the industry (and have relevant B.A. background) are encouraged to apply to an M.Sc. at the Industrial Engineering and Management Department.

no...I am very interested in psychology, but want to apply more "classic" approaches to psychological science
|
Although the advances in data science can be beneficial in many aspects of psychological research, there are many avenues of psychological research wherein the data science tools (e.g., application of machine learning methods, working with very big data) are not required and even not especially useful. Students who wish to become research psychologists but are less interested in data science are encouraged to apply to various other M.A. research programs at the Psychology Department.

No...I am very interested in psychology and in the application of data science methods to my research, but I am really not technical and I suffered in the stats courses.
|
Compared to the other M.A. programs, the psychological data science track entails a greater emphasis on statistics and programming. If you are not the sort of person who is already very comfortable with those aspects of research, the data science track will require you to invest some efforts in improving your skills in those areas. If you feel that you will not have enough time or motivation to invest these efforts, this track may be less suitable for you.

YES!I am very interested in psychology and in the application of data science methods to my research, and I feel like I can deal with advanced stats and some programming
|
Sounds like a good fit! You are encouraged to contact us regarding application and chances of acceptance.
